The textbooks of Spanish (L2) published in Romania under communism

This paper looks at the textbooks of Spanish (L2) published in Romania during the communist regime and designed for the state educational system. More precisely, it investigates the ideological elements and the mechanisms of communist propaganda. The new political regime needed to reform the whole educational system in order to create the "new man" in the spirit of its values and ideology. After the liberalization in the first period of Ceausescu's regime, Romanians started travelling more and began learning foreign languages other than Russian. The Spanish textbooks published in this context aimed at developing the national identity through texts and visual elements that highlight Romania's natural beauty, glorious past, economic development, etc. The paratext depicts Romanian factories, representative buildings, monuments, landscapes, but few cultural elements of the Spanish speaking world. The vocabulary is sometimes highly specialised for beginner students. The analysed textbooks do not develop the intercultural competence and aim at highlighting the activity of the Romanian Communist Party.

El presente trabajo versa sobre los manuales de español como lengua extranjera editados en Rumania durante el régimen comunista y diseñados para el sistema educativo público. Más concretamente, analiza los elementos ideológicos y los mecanismos de la propaganda comunista. El nuevo régimen político tenía que reformar todo el sistema educativo para crear "el nuevo hombre" en el espíritu de sus valores e ideología. Tras la liberalización que caracteriza la primera etapa del régimen de Ceausescu, los rumanos empezaron a viajar más y a aprender idiomas extranjeros, además del ruso. Los manuales de ELE publicados en este contexto se proponen fomentar la identidad nacional mediante textos y elementos visuales que ponen de manifiesto las bellezas naturales de Rumania, su pasado glorioso, su desarrollo económico, etc. El paratexto reproduce imágenes de fábricas, edificios representativos, monumentos, paisajes, pero son pocos los elementos culturales del mundo hispanohablante. A veces, el léxico es demasiado especializado para aprendices principiantes. Los manuales analizados no desarrollan la competencia intercultural y se proponen evidenciar la actividad del Partido Comunista Rumano.
