Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust from the perspective of social research

Edukacja o Auschwitz i Holokauście, jako sfera działań praktycznych i przedmiot refleksji pedagogiki, stawia sobie różne cele i zakłada rozmaite efekty, dotyczące znajomości faktów oraz kształtowania postaw i wartości. Obejmuje zasadniczo młodzież, ale i inne kategorie odbiorców. Prowadzona jest w zmieniających się warunkach kulturowych, społecznych i politycznych. Edukacja o Auschwitz i Holokauście, w tym szczególnie problematyka jej celów, efektów i uwarunkowań, stała się również przedmiotem badań empirycznych prowadzonych przez przedstawicieli różnych dyscyplin nauk społecznych, zwłaszcza psychologii i socjologii, oraz samych edukatorów. Jednym z wiodących problemów podejmowanym zarówno w refleksji pedagogicznej i praktyce edukacyjnej, jak i w badaniach empirycznych jest pytanie o jakość i skuteczność nauczania o Auschwitz i Zagładzie jako sposobu kształtowania postaw młodzieży poprzez przekazywanie wiedzy. W niniejszym artykule podejmujemy dyskusję wokół tej problematyki w oparciu o przedstawione przez nas wyniki i założenia metodologiczne najważniejszych spośród badań społecznych dotyczących edukacji o Auschwitz i Holokauście zrealizowanych w Polsce od lat 1990. Zastanowimy się też, jakie wnioski dla praktyki edukacyjnej płyną z tych badań oraz jakie podejście badawcze i sposoby pomiaru zdają się najlepiej diagnozować edukację o Auschwitz i Holokauście pod kątem jej celów, efektów i uwarunkowań.

Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust as a sphere of practical activity and a subject matter of pedagogical reflection establishes various objectives and effects for itself. They concern the knowledge of facts and formation of attitudes and values. This education concerns essentially the youth, but also other categories of recipients. It is conducted under the changing cultural, societal, and political circumstances. Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust, in particular its objectives, effects, and conditions, has also become a subject matter of empirical research conducted by representatives of various disciplines of the social sciences, in particular psychology and sociology, and by educators themselves. One of the leading problems taken both in the pedagogical reflection and educational practice as well as in empirical research is the question about the quality and effectiveness of teaching about Auschwitz and the Holocaust as a means of formation of attitudes of the youth through the transfer of knowledge. In this article, we discuss this problematics based upon the results and methodological assumptions of the most important social research projects concerning education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust that have been carried out in Poland since the 1990s. We also consider what conclusions for the educational practice one may draw from this research and what research approaches and means of measurement seem to best diagnose education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust as far as its objectives, effects, and conditions are concerned.
