Artykuł jest poświęcony Rebece West, która jako zagorzała feministka, a jednocześnie krytyk literacki, powieściopisarka, eseistka, dramaturg, poetka, biografka, reportażystka i korespondentka polityczna, autorka wspaniałych listów nadal jest stosunkowo mało znana w Polsce. West w ciągu kilku dziesięcioleci swej twórczości wielokrotnie zajmowała wyraziste stanowisko w fundamentalnie ważnych kwestiach – jako nastolatka broniła praw kobiet i potępiała kapitalistów, by w latach czterdziestych piętnować zdrajców, w kolejnej dekadzie komunistów, a w latach osiemdziesiątych zwolenników apartheidu. Black Lamb and Grey Falcon Rebeki West jest arcydziełem reportażu podróżniczego, w którym odniesienie do historii, opisy miejsc i charakterystyki bohaterów są spajane wątkiem osobistych doświadczeń autorki. W dwóch obszernych tomach jedna z najbardziej utalentowanych i wnikliwych brytyjskich dziennikarek XX wieku nie tylko poszerzyła i zintensyfikowała wzorzec gatunkowy książki podróżniczej, ale dokonała swoistej apoteozy tej formy. Rebecca West była pisarką, która – już w latach trzydziestych XX wieku – demaskowała szkodliwe stereotypy, piętnowała próby paternalistycznego zawłaszczania Europy przez mocarstwa zachodnie, a tym samym starała się naszkicować na nowo kulturową mapę kontynentu.

This article is devoted to Rebecca West, who, as a fierce feminist and at the same time a literary critic, novelist, essayist, playwright, poet, biographer, reporter, political correspondent and author of wonderful letters, is still relatively unknown in Poland. Over the decades of her writing, West repeatedly took a strong stance on fundamentally important issues – as a teenager she defended women’s rights and condemned capitalists, to denounce traitors in the 1940s, communists in the next decade, and supporters of apartheid in the 1980s. Rebecca West’s Black Lamb and Grey Falcon is a masterpiece of travel reportage in which reference to history, descriptions of places, and characterizations of characters are bound together by the thread of the author’s personal experiences. In two extensive volumes, one of the most talented and insightful British female journalists of the twentieth century not only expanded and intensified the genre pattern of the travel book but also achieved a kind of apotheosis of the form. She was a writer who – as early as the 1930s – exposed harmful stereotypes, denounced the attempts of Western powers to paternalistically appropriate Europe, and thus sought to redraw the cultural map of the continent.
