The theatre of Alfonso Vallejo and the theatre of the absurd : revindication of canon in "El escuchador de hielo"

Alfonso Vallejo is one of the most famous playwrights of modern Spain. He is also a poet, a painter and a doctor. He combines all of those disciplines and this has its consequences in the construction of the drama. Vallejo tries to reach the fundaments of human soul, which is possible only when one rejects realistic aesthetics. Critics describe his theatre as existential, but also detect some characteristics of surrealism and the theatre of the absurd. We consider Vallejo's theatre as continuation of the theatre of the absurd, at least in some parts of his plays. The purpose of our work is to determine some elements of the theatre of the absurd in his play "El escuchador de hielo". Moreover, we would like to focus on the vanguardist tradition seen as part of canonic theatre and its relationship with Vallejo's plays.

Alfonso Vallejo es uno de los dramaturgos más conocidos en la España contemporánea. Es, además, poeta, pintor y médico. La combinación de estas disciplinas tiene su repercusión en la construcción del universo teatral. Vallejo trata de llegar ante todo a las raíces del alma humana, lo cual solo es posible al rechazar las prácticas realistas. Los críticos describen su teatro como existencialista, con rasgos surrealistas y próximos al teatro del absurdo. A nuestro modo de ver Vallejo es un continuador del teatro del absurdo en su sentido amplio , al menos en parte de sus obras. El propósito de este trabajo es señalar los rasgos de este teatro del absurdo en "El escuchador de hielo" de Alfonso Vallejo. Es menester, además, ver los dramas de Vallejo como una continuación de la tradición vanguardista, considerando esta una parte del canon teatral.
