Open Access

Open Access is becoming an increasingly popular way to share knowledge, also by sharing files through a repository (more information about the file deposit policy in RUJ here ).

The benefits of publishing in open access are found on many levels. In the first place, the global visibility of the university is improved. For the researcher, sharing the results of his or her work lead to increasing number of quotations and building prestige by establishing cooperation with foreign research centers of similar profile. Publication in open access stimulates the national economical growth through a better transfer of research results to business*.

Publishing in OA does not deprive the author of the rights to his/her publication (regardless of the degree of using the work), however, it is important to distinguish two basic models of open access: gratis and libre. In the gratis model, the author agrees only to make the publication available via Internet without consenting to using it in any other way, while the libre model assumes the author's additional consent to use the results of his/her work for a very wide range of purposes**.

Since 2010, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education has been funding the national scientific publication programme Springer Open Choice.

The programme enables articles to be published in scientific journals on an open access basis (Open Access).

Users do not pay any fees for access to Open Access articles, as the costs of their publication are transferred to research funding institutions. Authors retain the copyright and have the possibility to disseminate their text through a university repository, using the CC-BY license.

The scheme involves the so-called hybrid journals in Springer, where only part of the articles are offered free of charge within paid subscriptions. Owing to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education funding, the availability of publications by authors with affiliation to any Polish academic, scientific, or educational institution has significantly increased.
