Stefan Szuman's investigations of drawings of the mentally handicapped children

Artykuł ma charakter historiograficzny (historia wychowania), przedstawia badania prof. Stefana Szumana nad rysunkami dzieci upośledzonych umysłowo. Uczony prowadził badania zagadnień schematu rysunkowego dzieci niepełnosprawnych intelektualnie w Poznaniu i Bydgoszczy w Polsce w 1925 r. Wyniki swoich badań przedstawił w osobnym studium (1925) oraz w książce dot. sztuki dziecka (1927). Autor w artykule porządkuje poszczególne wątki badawcze. Zestawia (prekursorskie w Polsce) badania S. Szumana z wcześniejszymi badaniami tego zagadnienia (poza Polską). Autor ukazuje kontekst badawczy, wnioski S. Szumana, które są istotne także dla arteterapii dzieci upośledzonych umysłowo, w porównaniu z dziećmi sprawnymi umysłowo. Badania S. Szumana w zasadzie są nadal aktualne, adekwatne do rzeczywistości. Wyniki jego badań zachowują swoją ważność. Nie straciły swojego znaczenia, choć zmienił się język opisu zagadnienia (terminologia psychologiczno-pedagogiczna). S. Szuman pisał o ‘pedagogice leczniczej’ przez rysunek, dziś „pedagogikę leczniczą” przez rysunek nazwać należy ‘arteterapią’ przez rysunki.

The paper is historiographical (history of eduaction).The author presents professor Stefan Szuman's investigation on drawings done by mentally handicapped children. The professor investigated issues of mentally handicaped children's drawing scheme in Poznan and Bydgoszcz in Poland in 1925. He presented results of his studies in one separate contribution (1925) and in his book concerning children's art (1927). The article puts in order special research motives. The author in the article compares the primary (forerunner's) in Poland Szuman's studies with some earlier studies on this issue outside Poland. The author presents also the research context and Szuman's conclusions, which are important for art therapy of mentally hanidicapped children, comparing with children who are mentally efficient. Szuman's studies are basically actually present and adeaquate to reality now. Results of his investigations are important. They have not lost their sense, however the language of description this issue (peagogical and psychological terms) changed. S. Szuman wrote about 'medicted pedagogy through drawing' ('medicinal pedagogy through drawing'), but today it should be named "art therapy" by drawings.
