A rational surrealism by Apollinaire vs. Breton's concept

Apollinaire (1880-1918) użył po raz pierwszy słowa "surrealizm" w 1917 roku w od-niesieniu do dwóch przedstawień - baletu Jeana Cocteau Parada i swego dramatu Les Mamelles de Tirésias (Cycki Tyrezjasza). Oznaczało ono dzieło będące efektem pracy artysty nowego, zarazem śmiałe, syntetyczne, racjonalne, zaskakujące, zabawne. André Breton (1896-1966), wielbiciel poezji Apollinaire'a, zapożyczył ten termin po śmierci poety dla określenia własnego nurtu artystycznego. Pod wpływem Jacques'a Vachégo, anarchisty i dadaisty, odciął się od estetyki Apollinaire'a i nadał słowu "surrealizm" diametralnie inne znaczenie, określone w Manifeście surrealizmu z 1924 roku.

For the first time Apollinaire applied the word "surrealism" in 1917 as referring to two performances-Cocteau's ballet Parade and his own play The Breasts of Tiresias. It defined a work of art created by an artist of a new spirit, which was brave, synthetic, rational, surprising, and amusing. André Breton, Apollinaire's admirer, took over the term after the poet's death in 1918 to define his own movement. Influenced by Jacques Vaché, an anarchist and Dadaist, he denied Apollinaire's esthetics and gave the word "surrealism" a diametrically different meaning presented it in The Manifest of Surrealism, 1924.
