Artykuł przedstawia zagadnienia związane z krajobrazem (i środowiskiem przyrodniczym, względnie geograficznym). Zainteresowanie tą tematyką, omawianą w odniesieniu do Polski, wiąże się z dużymi zmianami w otoczeniu współczesnego człowieka i potrzebą przeciwdziałania im drogą racjonalnej gospodarki przestrzennej i ochrony przyrody. Wspomniane jest malarstwo krajobrazowe, opisy w literaturze pięknej, przytoczone fragmenty poematu W. Pola. Przedstawiono klasyfikację krajobrazów i zbiorowisk roślinnych z nimi związanych, mającą za podstawę stopień wpływów antropogenicznych oraz niektóre cechy zbiorowisk (zespołów) roślinnych, badane w fitosocjologii. Osobny fragment poświęcono przeglądowi prac opisowych, dotyczących omawianych zagadnień od początków XX w. po lata obecne. Podano przegląd nowych koncepcji teoretycznych, a po części i filozoficznych, rozwijanych głównie w ramach geografii fizycznej. Należą tu rozmaite definicje terminu „krajobraz”, „ekologia krajobrazu”, bardziej szczegółowa koncepcja „usług ekosystemowych” itd. Wspomniano o ważnych nowych metodach gromadzenia i wizualizacji danych za pomocą technik komputerowych, GIS i GPS. Wymieniono też główne czasopisma, organizacje i konferencje na temat krajobrazów. Rozdział końcowy zawiera dane o działaniach niszczących walory naszego otoczenia i o sposobach ochrony, zwłaszcza w parkach narodowych. Dalsze prace naukowe i działania praktyczne dla zachowania walorów krajobrazów, a także środowisk przyrodniczych, są ogromnie potrzebne.

The present paper discusses various problems concerning the landscape and widely defined biological or geographical environment. The interest in those topics results from the increasing human impact on the surroundings. At the beginning, some Polish painters, novelists and poets dealing with the beauty of landscape are mentioned. Then, a few simple definitions of landscape (and the environment) are presented, and the role of vegetation in nature is described. There is also included a comparison between the classification of landscapes and the classification of plant communities according to the degree of their natural state or anthropogenic changes. Those and other features presented within the scope of phytosociology are very useful in the management of particular lands. A separate chapter contains the review of descriptive Polish publications, connected with the topics under discussion. The next chapter is devoted to information about new theoretical concepts developed mostly within the scope of geography, such as a definition of “landscape ecology”, “ecosystem services”, the use of new methods – GPS and GIS – in cartography and in other documentation. Subsequently some journals, handbooks (also the new handbook of T.J. Chmielewski is described) and organizations dealing with the scope of landscape (and the environment) are quoted. The final part contains short information about the most important damage to our natural surroundings and the countermeasures such as legal regulations and various forms of nature conservation. For practical actions, defined as active nature conservation, the knowledge of plant communities and their succession trends is very important. Further investigation and care about landscape should be considered as indispensable.
