On the special difficulties of literary translation from modern Hebrew into Polish as exemplified by the novel Mar Mani
A. B. Yehoshua
Mr. Mani
Modern Hebrew prose
Polish translations
The novel Mr. Mani by A. B. Yehoshua consists of five conversations conducted in intervals of several decades between 1848 (conversation no. 5) and 1982 (conversation no. 1). Conversation no. 1 is carried on in present-day spoken Hebrew, while the style of the previous conversations is literary, bookish, sometimes archaic. The differences between the two registers of the Hebrew language are mainly grammatical, to less extent lexical. The novel has been translated into Polish by Leszek Kwiatkowski. His translation turns out to be very successful. The translator conveyed the different registers of the original mainly by means of vocabulary. His task was not easy because the vocabulary used in a translation is imposed by the meaning of the original text.
