Abstract in English
The article makes an attempt to characterize irony in Józef Wittlin’s Salt of the Earth, also in reference to the other texts written by Wittlin. The author uses the most signifi cant twentieth-century irony investigation methodologies, but also the works of the researchers exploring Wittlin’s creations: D.S. Muecke, D. Sperber i D. Wilson, B. Allemann, W. Szturc, P. Łaguna, K. Jakowska, Z. Yurieff and E. Wiegandt. The irony is treated here as a world-view attitude, crated - among other things - due to the experiences of World War I. Thanks to the ironical approach to the reality (which is visible in Salt of the Earth on the stylistic level for instance), the world of inner values is retained. In this manner it undergoes the rhythm of Bachtin’s carnivalesque.
