Dawniej uważano, że wizerunki Galaktotrofusy zostały zapożyczone ze sztuki włoskiego ducenta i trecenta w okresie pobizantyńskim. Jednak pewne przesłanki pozwalają przyjąć, że były znane już w okresie środkowobizantyńskim i popularne za panowania dynastii Paleologów.

Images of the Virgin Mary breastfeeding the Christ Child (Virgo Lactans, Galaktotrophousa) are among the most fascinating and the least researched subjects of Byzantine Marian iconography. In the past, it was believed that the images of Galaktotrophousa were borrowed from the art of the Italian Ducento and treacle during the Post-Byzantine period (after 1453). However, some premises allow us to assume that they were already known in the Middle Byzantine period and popular during the reign of the Palaiologos dynasty (1261-1453).
