Mieczyslaw Kreutz's defense of introspection : a "swan song" or a promise of its better future?

When Mieczysław Kreutz published his defense of introspection in the mid 20th century, the fate of this method was already sealed. Arguments difficult to dismiss were given by many psychologists interested in the unconscious mental processes as well as by those taking the behaviorist perspective. The possibility of ascertaining one’s own mental processes was proclaimed an illusion, and human consciousness as a subject of introspection was regarded as a theoretical construct similar to other psychological concepts. In the light of these arguments, the defense of introspection proposed by Kreutz seems more like a swan song for this method than a promise of its better future.

Kiedy w połowie XX wieku Mieczysław Kreutz publikował swoją obronę introspekcji, losy tej metody były już przesądzone. Trudne do zlekceważenie argumenty przeciwko introspekcji formułowali liczni psychologowie nieświadomości oraz badacze o behawiorystycznej orientacji. Możliwość bezpośredniego poznawania własnych procesów psychicznych została uznana za iluzję, zaś ludzka świadomość będąca jej przedmiotem – za taki sam konstrukt teoretyczny, jak inne kategorie psychologiczne. W świetle powyższych argumentów obrona introspekcji przedstawiona przez Kreutza wydaje się raczej łabędzim śpiewem tej metody, niż zapowiedzią jej lepszej przyszłości.
