Egoists : a third way in Polish culture of the 1980s

Tematem książki jest analiza fenomenu trzeciej drogi w kulturze polskiej lat osiemdziesiątych, definiowanego przez postawę krytyczną nie tylko wobec komunistycznej władzy, ale - przede wszystkim - wobec przenikającego życie społeczne i artystyczne dyskursu narodowego i religijnego. Książka ma zatem dwa podstawowe wymiary. Chodzi po pierwsze o ukazanie sposobu, w jaki dyskurs narodowy i religijny wyznaczał w kulturze polskiej lat osiemdziesiątych (ze szczególnym naciskiem na pierwszą połowę dekady i ruch Solidarność) rytm życia zbiorowego, określając horyzont oczekiwanych postaw, zachowań i wartości. Po drugie - chodzi o analizę strategii i praktyk krytycznych wypracowanych w obrębie trzeciej drogi (reprezentowanej przez środowisko artystyczne Kultury Zrzuty), rozumianych jako sposób wydobycia się spod presji norm życia wspólnoty, określających parametry zbiorowej i jednostkowej tożsamości. Ramą książki jest namysł nad polską formacją kulturową, a horyzont badawczy wyznacza myślenie o pluralizacji i demokratyzacji sfery publicznej.

The subject of the book is an analysis of the phenomenon of the third way in Polish culture on the eighties as defined by attitudes critical not only to the communist authorities but - above all - the national and religious discourse penetrating the social and artistic life. The book thus has two basic dimensions. Firstly, the idea is to show the way in which the national and religious discourse determined the rhythm of collective life in Polish culture of the eighties (with special emphasis on the first half of the decade and Solidarity movement) and thus defined the horizon of the expected attitudes, behaviours and values. Secondly, the purpose is to analyse the critical strategies and practices undertaken in the third way sphere (represented by Kultura Zrzuty [Pitch-in Culture] artistic community), understood as the way of getting away from the pressure of the social norms of community life defining the parameters of collective and individual identity. The framework of the book is considering the Polish cultural formation, and the research horizon is specified by the thinking of pluralisation and democratisation of the public sphere.
