Eros and Thanatos, Kierkegaard and Jaspers : sickness unto Death in Max Blecher's "Scarred hearts" and Bruno Schulz's "Sanatorium under the sign of the hourglass"

W tekście omawiam problematykę dzieł Brunona Schulza i Maxa Blechera (odkrywanego w Polsce rumuńsko-żydowskiego pisarza). Książki wymienione w tytule ukazały się w 1937 roku i można je zaliczyć do kręgu "literatury sanatoryjnej". Powieść Blechera prezentuje pewne strategie radzenia sobie ze śmiertelną chorobą i skończonością ludzkiego istnienia oraz związanym z nimi wyalienowaniem. Analizuję także podobne wątki w twórczości Schulza (choroba Ojca, motywy tanatyczne, erotyczne, temporalne). Obaj pisarze zdają się twierdzić, że śmierci oraz choroby jako sytuacji granicznych nie sposób poznać i opisać w kategoriach zrozumiałych/dostępnych dla ludzkiego języka, przynależą one bowiem do sfery "nieludzkiego", będąc jednocześnie czymś arcyludzkim. Odwołuję się do myśli takich badaczy, jak Paul Ricœur, Susan Sontag, Jerzy Franczak, Czesława Piecuch, a także do filozofii Sørena Kierkegaarda i Karla Jaspersa.

My article is an attempt to describe the problematic of Bruno Schulz's and Max Blecher's (a Jewish-Romanian writer) works; both novels, mentioned in the title, were pub-lished in 1937 and can be considered as the representation of "sanitarium literature".Blecher's novel presents certain strategies of dealing with a terminal illness and fini-tude of human existence. I'm also analyzing similar themes in the works of Schulz (Father's illness, thanatic, erotic and temporal motifs). Both writers seem to be saying that death and disease, as the limit situations, cannot be described in terms under-standable/accessible to human language. I refer to the ideas of such scholars as Paul Ricœur, Susan Sontag, Jerzy Franczak, Czesława Piecuch, and to the philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard and Karl Jaspers.
