Changes in Canada's official name as a symbol of Canadian liberation from British influences
The article aims to prove a thesis that changes in Canada’s official name reflect an evolution of Canadian-British relations and symbolize the long-lasting and gradual process of Canadian transition from a colonial dependency to a self-governing country, independent in foreign affairs. The issue of the formal political name of Canada is not exclusively a contemporary problem, but it has its roots in history. Therefore, the article presents a historical background to show how Britain’s decline as a world superpower resulted in Canada’s loosening ties with the UK, which, subsequently, led to the withdrawal of the expression “Dominion of Canada” from the Canadian government’s official documents. Moreover, the paper focuses on the very definitions of “Dominium” and “Commonwealth Realm” as they themselves seem to be a good illustration of changes in Canadian political status. Finally, I intend to present a discrepancy between the Canadian Constitution of 1982 and British North America Act of 1867 in this matter.
