Issues of defensive settlement of the Pueblo culture in the Mesa Verde Region (from 1150 to 1300 A.D.) : Selected aspects

Kultura Pueblo jest jedną z kilku kultur indiańskich rozwijających się na terenie Południowego Zachodu Ameryki Północnej. Jednym z najciekawszych etapów jej rozwoju w regionie Mesa Verde, na pograniczu dzisiejszych stanów Kolorado i Utah, jest okres Pueblo III (1150-1300 r. n.e.), kiedy to dochodzi do wyraźnych zmian kulturowo-społecznych oraz do zmiany modelu osadniczego. W tym okresie ludność Pueblo przenosi się w tereny trudno dostępne o charakterze defensywnym i wznosi tam swoje osady, których architektura w znaczący sposób różni się od wcześniejszej. Na stanowiskach pojawia się zwarta zabudowa, wysokie mury z otworami obserwacyjnymi oraz charakterystyczne dla tego okresu wieże. Wspominane osady wznoszone są z trwałego materiału budowlanego - obrobionych bloków piaskowca oraz drewna. Dzięki temu duża ilość stanowisk archeologicznych kultury Pueblo z tego okresu zachowała się w bardzo dobrym stanie, a w kanionach regionu Mesa Verde po dziś dzień można podziwiać imponujące budowle z czasów prekolumbijskich. Artykuł ma na celu przybliżenie czytelnikowi problematyki konfliktów w kulturze Pueblo w regionie Mesa Verde oraz przedstawienie między innymi na podstawie architektury przykładów zmian, do jakich doszło w okresie Pueblo III.

Pueblo culture is one of the Indians cultures, which developed in Southwestern area of North America. One of the most interesting development period in Mesa Verde Region (part of Utah and Colorado) is Pueblo III dated on A.D. 1150-1300. Then we can observe cultural and social changes and additional settlement pattern modification. In Pueblo III period population assumes their settlements in defensive locations and their architecture is diametrically different from the earlier periods. On the archaeological sites we can see high walls with loopholes and the characteristic towers. These settlements are built of durable building materials such as sandstone blocks and wood. Due to this fact, a large number of Pueblo archaeological sites from this period have been preserved almost intact, and until nowadays in the canyons of the Mesa Verde region we can admire impressive pre-Columbian buildings. The aim of this article is to explain the issues of conflicts among the Pueblo Indians in Mesa Verde Region, and to present examples of changes in architecture that occurred during the Pueblo III period.
