The article is dedicated to the first efforts of the Iranian laymen thinkers and the Shi’a clergymen to understand the European values. Islam and Christianity are presented from the culture studies perspective – as the basis for mentality, anthropological conception, the social and political systems. The conducted analysis reveals the irreconcilability of two cultures that were recognized as a closed culture (the one based on Islam) and an open culture (the one based on Christianity and Enlightenment ideas).
