Pamięć zbiorowa to jeden z najważniejszych elementów procesu kształtowania tożsamości społeczeństw. W pluralistycznym społeczeństwie współczesnego Zachodu mamy do czynienia z wielością interpretacji i wielością pamięci. Różne konkurujące ze sobą instytucje prezentują alternatywne wersje przeszłości; powstają konkurencyjne ideologiczne interpretacje świata, stanowiące układ odniesienia, w którym konstruowana jest zbiorowa tożsamość. Największą rolę odgrywa w tym zakresie władza symboliczna, na ogół zresztą współistniejąca z polityczną i ekonomiczną.

Collective memory is one of the most important elements of the identity construction process. In pluralistic societies of the contemporary West we can find a variety of interpretations and "memories". Different institutions that compete with each other present us with alternative versions of the past; many different, clashing ideologies are being created and they constitute a certain frame of reference inside of which a collective memory is being constructed. It is the symbolic power that plays the biggest part in this process, which usually coexists with the political and economic power.
