Memory holds and organizes personal experience and acquired knowledge in order to make these data suitable for further processing. The extent to which memory functions in an original or peculiar way is therefore crucial for creativity. Creative use of memory includes three major stages of long term memory processes: encoding, storage, and retrieval. Sensory memory and working memory are also important for both creation of novel ideas and appreciation of pieces of art.
