"Everyone has one thousand on the left and myriads on the right" (Berakhot 6a) : some initial remarks on the Rabbinic imagination and the demons of the Babylonian Talmud

Niniejsze studium ma na celu (1) sformułowanie założeń metodologicznych badań nad demonologią Talmudu babilońskiego [dalej: TB] jako ekspresją pewnych schematów działania rabinicznej wyobraźni, (2) robocze zdefiniowanie pojęcia "demon", (3) prezentację rezultatów dotychczas przeprowadzonych badań oraz (4) określenie potencjalnych kierunków dalszego rozwoju niniejszego przedsięwzięcia. Projekt tutaj opisany opiera się na założeniach lingwistyki kognitywnej, kognitywnej teorii religii, podejścia formalnego i strukturalno-semiotycznego w badaniach nad mitem oraz statystyki lingwistycznej. Przez "demona" rozumie się literacką istotę antropomorficzną, częściowo niedostrzegalną ale zdolną do wywierania wpływu na człowieka i wchodzenia w różne z nim interakcje. Wszystkie fragmenty demonologiczne TB można sklasyfikować z uwagi na gatunek literacki. Niektóre z demonów TB (np. anioł śmierci, szatan) występują przede wszystkim w powiedzeniach i wyrażeniach eufemistycznych, inne natomiast (np. yêṣęr hārâ) stanowią przedmiot teoretycznej refleksji.

The main purposes of the present study are: (1) to formulate the methodological principles of the study of the Talmudic demonology as an expression of the patterns typical for the Rabbinic imagination, (2) to supply a working definition of "demon", (3) to present the provisional results of the current investigations and (4) to suggest some potential directions for the further investigations. The project bases on the principles of cognitive linguistics, the cognitive theory of religion, formal and structural-semiotic approach to the study of myth and linguistic statistics. The "demon" is hereby understood as a literary anthropomorphic figure, partially imperceptible, yet capable of interacting with and influencing humans. All the demonological fragments of the Talmud can be classified according to their literary genre. Some of the demons (e.g. angel of death, satan) appear mostly in proverbs and euphemistic expressions while the other (e.g. yêṣęr hārâ) are the object of the theoretical reflection.
