In post-modern times, when emphasis is placed on taking responsibility for one’s life, when a human being has to create its identity again and again and everything seems to be under a considerable threat of failure, Maria Montessori’s education method appears to be particularly appealing. What is outstanding in Maria Montessori’s views concerning the child, taking into consideration the challenges of post-modernism, are particularly the activity, the independence, the individuality of a human being. These three elements are the fundament of universal development, of becoming an autonomous human being. An important role in this process is played by the teacher, who supports the pupil’s work. The teacher is the child’s helper, companion and organiser of the educational background. Everything takes place in the school - a place specially organised and designed to enable self-fulfilment and universal development. This development is concerned not only with the mind, but also the physical, emotional, social and spiritual being.
