Gatunek powieści i jego europejskie przykłady często były przedmiotem refleksji w esejach Wiaczesława Iwanowa. Powieści Cercvantesa, Goethego, Novalisa, Balzaca, Lermontowa, Puszkina, Gogola, L. Tołstoja, Dostojewskiego, A. Biełego były postrzegane przez rosyjskiego pisarza-myśliciela jako ważne źródła wiedzy antropologicznej i diagnostyczny instrument określający stan kultury. W artykule rozpatrywane są różne aspekty analizy powieści, wskazane przez W. Iwanowa: typy autorskiego postrzegania rzeczywistości, wskaźniki ewolucji gatunku, znaczenie Dostojewskiego jako twórcy nowego typu powieści-tragedii, wzorce osobowości epickich i tragicznych. Iwanow podkreślał wpływ powieści na świadomość Rosjan i równocześnie wskazywał na nowe formy powieści jako świadectwo indywidualistycznych tendencji widocznych w kulturze europejskiej.

The novel as a literary genre and its European epitomies hаd been frequently referred to in essays by Vyacheslav Ivanov. Novels by Cervantes, Goethe, Novalis, Balzac, Lermontov, Pushkin, Gogol, Leo Tolstoy, Dostoevsky and Andrey Bely had been regarded as important sources of anthropological knowledge and diagnostic tools, indicating the condition of culture. This paper focuses on several aspects of novel raised by Ivanov, such as: types of author’s attitude towards reality, landmarks of genre evolution, the importance of Dostoevsky as the creator of a new type of novel-tragedy, patterns of epic and of tragic personalities. Ivanov stressed the influence of novels on the Russian mind and at the same time he indicated new forms of novel regarded as proofs of individualistic trends in European culture.
