This chapter presents the classification of the Turkic language family, includ- ing a description of the still unresolved issues regarding its taxonomy. The chapter pre- sents and exemplifies both the inherited structural features of the Turkic languages and the innovations that are effects of language contact in the form of a concise histori- cal-comparative grammar of the Turkic languages and language subgroups. In addition, each Turkic language receives here an up-to-date description regarding its place on the map of Eurasia and strength.
