The woman teacher (pedagogini) : a literary figure of alienation

Szkic poświęcony jest nauczycielce, zwłaszcza ludowej, jako postaci literackiej w tekstach II połowy XIX i początków XX w., także w tych z nurtu popularnego. Przyjęta w opisie literacko-kulturowa perspektywa pozwoliła na powiązanie rozważań o bohaterkach utworów (przede wszystkim S. Żeromskiego, ale też M. Bałuckiego, I. Maciejowskiego, J. Strokowej), z pytaniami o kształtowanie się kobiecych wzorów tożsamościowych, ról społecznych czy rozwijania się etosu inteligenta, wreszcie o źródła stereotypowych ujęć postaci nauczycielki. Wprowadzone w tytule słowo pedagogini, które pochodzi ze słownika epoki, lecz nie istnieje we współczesnym dyskursie, a nawet zostało wyparte z kulturowej pamięci, posłużyło do ukazania nauczycielki jako postaci podlegającej wyobcowaniu i samowyobcowaniu w androcentrycznie nacechowanej kulturze.

This article deals with the representations of the woman teacher (especially one who takes a post in a primary school in the countryside) in a broad range of literary texts of the late 19th and early 20th century. Indeed, neither literary heavyweights like Stefan Żeromski nor popular writers like Michał Bałucki, Ignacy Maciejowski or Jadwiga Strokowa are averse to having female teachers as the principal characters of their fi ctions. This fact, when analyzed from a literary-cultural perspective, gives rise to questions about changes in the traditional, stereotype image of the teacher, the emergence of the female teacher as a new social role and its relation to the ethos of the intelligentsia, and, last not least, the creation of a new female identity. The contemporaries were well aware of the nature of the change and even coined a feminine word ‘pedagogini’ (institutrice), which gave a sharp contour to the new female role and identity. Unfortunately, the word has not outlasted its epoch. It seems that its disappearance from the androcentric cultural memory followed its appropriation by discourses which focused on the social isolation and self-alienation of woman teachers at their rural outposts.
