Acoustics, mimesis, esthetics, articulation : ancient Greeks on phones

Celem artykułu jest identyfikacja kryterów stosowanych przez Greków przy opisie, definiowaniu i klasyfikowaniu głosek języka. Z przeprowadzonych analiz wynika, iż na początkowym, „filozoficznym” etapie rozwoju greckiej refleksji nad językiem (Platon, Arystoteles) odwoływano się do cech akustycznych (audytywnych) i artykulacyjnych głosek, natomiast w ramach późniejszej tradycji gramatycznej (Techne gramatike) właściwości artykulacyjne nie były uwzględniane, zaś z cechami akustycznymi powiązano określone wartościowanie estetyczne. Chociaż ostatecznie greccy gramatycy wyodrębnili wszystkie podstawowe klasy głosek, ich poprawną identyfikację i właściwy opis uniemożliwiło z jednej strony odejście od kryterium artykulacyjnego, z drugiej ich utożsamianie z wartościami fonetycznymi liter.

The aim of the paper is to characterize the criteria applied by ancient Greeks for describing, defining and classifying the phones of the language. The analysis of the appropriate passages shows that on the first, philosophical stage of Greek linguistics (Plato, Aristotle) both acoustic and articulatory features were referred to, while within the framework of the later, the grammatical tradition (Techne grammatike) articulatory properties were no longer taken into consideration, whereas acoustic features were associated with specific esthetic appraisal. Although the Greek grammarians finally succeeded in distinguishing all essential groups of phones, relinquishment of the articulatory criteria, on one hand,and identifying phones with definite phonetic values of letters on the other made it impossible for them to correctly recognize the whole set of Greek phones and to describe them in the correct way.
