Modern territorial disputes of Japan

Celem niniejszej pracy jest przedstawienie współczesnych konfliktów terytorialnych Japonii, wyjaśnienie przyczyn ich powstania oraz przedstawienie stron sporów. Obecnie Japonia posiada trzy terytoria sporne z państwami sąsiadującymi. Są to Terytoria Północne (Kuryle Południowe), Wyspy Senkaku (Diaoyu) oraz Takeshima (Dokdo). Rosja, Chiny oraz Korea Południowa nie zgadzają się z Japonią co do suwerenności nad nimi, przedstawiając argumenty geograficzne, historyczne oraz prawne. Na początku pracy przedstawiona została imperialna historia Japonii od końca XIX wieku do II wojny światowej, w której autorka szuka źródeł wymienionych konfliktów, zwracając szczególną uwagę na postanowienia Traktatu z San Francisco z 1951 roku. Następne rozdziały poświęcone są kolejno terytoriom spornym – obejmują ich historię, sytuację obecną oraz roszczenia i argumenty obu stron.

The aim of this thesis is to present modern territorial disputes of Japan, explain the causes of their inception and expand on the sides of the conflicts. Currently Japan has three disputed territories with neighbouring countries: Northern Territories (southern Kuril Islands), Senkaku Islands (Diaoyu) and Takeshima (Dokdo). Russia, China and South Korea do not agree with Japan on the sovereignty of mentioned territories citing geographic, historic and legal arguments. The beginning of the thesis presents the imperialistic history of Japan from the late XIX century, up until II World War during the course of which the author looks for the causes of mentioned disputes, putting emphasis on agreements of the San Francisco Treaty (1951). The following chapters are devoted to disputed territories, focusing on their history, current situation and claims of both sides.
