The thesis is an analysis of Frederick Barbarossa's relations with the papacy in the light of the "Gesta Friderici" of Otto of Freising and Rahevin during the period covered by this source, i.e. 1152-1160. It tries to identify the factors influencing the improvement or deterioration of mutual relations, including the role of the German episcopate. In addition, it points out how the chroniclers distorted the truth. It discusses the existence of Eugene III's approval of Barbarossa's election, the dispute over the staffing of the archbishopric of Magdeburg, the agreement of the two sides concluded at Constance, and the circumstances of the imperial coronation. It indicates the genesis of the Treaty of Benevento, regulating the relations of the papacy with the kingdom of Sicily, and the German reaction to this agreement. The thesis analyzes the background of the dispute that began with Adrian IV's use of the ambiguous word "beneficium" in a letter read at the Diet of Besançon. It discusses the circumstances of the election of a successor to the aforementioned pope and Frederick's actions during the first months of the schism, up to the synod at Pavia.
