The Struggle for Humanity in a Dystopian World: George Orwell’s 1984

W pracy przeprowadzono analizę głównych tematów i wątków obecnych w powieści Rok 1984 George’a Orwella. Autor zestawia w niej dwie skrajnie odmienne wizje – postulowany świat idealny i rzeczywistość, w której, aby osiągnąć doskonałość, wprowadzono rygorystyczną kontrolę prowadzącą do dehumanizacji. Główny bohater powieści, Winston Smith, staje się symbolem walki o zachowanie „atomu człowieczeństwa”. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiono wcześniejsze koncepcje utopii i relacje zachodzące między nimi a dystopijną powieścią brytyjskiego pisarza. W drugim rozdziale skupiono się na egzystencji w świecie dystopii; omówiono, jak reżim totalitarny sprawuje kontrolę nad ludźmi i zwrócono uwagę na mechanizmy psychologiczne, które ją umożliwiają. W trzecim rozdziale skoncentrowano się na postaci Winstona i jego życiu pod czujnym okiem Wielkiego Brata.

In this thesis the main themes and motifs in George Orwell’s novel 1984 are analyzed. The author juxtaposes two radically different visions: the postulated ideal world and the reality in which, in order to achieve perfection, strict control leading to dehumanization was introduced. The main character, Winston Smith, becomes a symbol of the struggle to preserve the “atom of humanity”. The first chapter presents the earlier concepts of utopia and the relationship between them and the British writer’s dystopian novel. The second chapter focuses on existence in the world of dystopia; it discusses how the totalitarian regime exercises control over people and put emphasis on the psychological mechanisms that make it possible. The third chapter focuses on the character of Winston and his life under the watchful eye of the Big Brother.
