Intertekstualność w książce John'a Gardner'a pod tytułem "Grendel"

Celem tej pracy jest zbadanie, co odwrócenie ról protagonisty i antagonisty oraz zmiana narratora ukazuje nam o anglosaskim społeczeństwie, a także co sprawia, że nowa wersja poematu o Beowulfie stworzona przez Gardnera z powodzeniem zachowuje ducha literatury staroangielskiej jednocześnie będąc w stanie przemówić do współczesnego czytelnika. Praca ta składa się z dwóch rozdziałów. Pierwszy rozdział wprowadza pojęcie intertekstualności, przedstawia jego utworzenie, ewolucję i funkcję. Dalsza analiza bada jak Gardner za pomocą postaci Grendela przeprowadza krytykę społeczeństwa anglosaskiego, która nawiązuje również do społeczeństwa postmodernistycznego. Badanie przeprowadzone w drugim rozdziale prezentuje w jaki sposób Gardner łączy ze sobą charakterystyczne elementy literatury staroangielskiej ze współczesną mową potoczną, slangiem oraz zwrotami używanymi w teatrze oraz na planie filmowym, w ten sposób tworząc nową wersję anglosaskiego poematu, która jest przystępniejsza dla współczesnego odbiorcy, ale jednocześnie wciąż zachowuje w sobie esencję literatury staroangielskiej. Drugi rozdział jest zwieńczony krótkim przeglądem odbioru książki przez krytyków, który podsumowuje starania autora. Badanie przeprowadzone w tej pracy licencjackiej pokazuje, że Grendel Gardner’a ukazuje poemat o Beowulfie w całkiem nowym świetle i zachęca czytelnika do ponownego zagłębienia się i ewaluacji anglosaskich wartości oraz oryginalnego poematu.

This BA thesis aims to examine what the reversal of roles of the protagonist and antagonist and change of narrator show us about the Anglo-Saxon society, as well as what makes Gardner’s retelling of Beowulf successful in maintaining the Old English spirit while being able to speak to the contemporary reader. The thesis comprises two chapters. The first chapter introduces the notion of intertextuality, its coinage, evolution and functions. Further analysis explores how Gardner uses the character of Grendel as the medium through which he conducts social commentary of the Anglo-Saxon community which reverberates with the postmodern society. The research conducted in the second chapter showcases how Gardner connects the characteristic features of Old English literature with modern colloquialisms, slang vocabulary and terms used in theatre, and cinematography, thus creating a retelling that is approachable for the contemporary audience while still preserving the essence of the Old English literature. The second chapter concludes with an overview of the book’s critical reception and acclaim, offering a short assessment of the author’s endeavours. The research conducted in this thesis indicates that Gardner’s Grendel sheds new light on Beowulf the poem, at the same time encouraging the reader to revisit and re-evaluate the Anglo-Saxon values and the original poem.
