The Republic of Tarnobrzeg : heritage non grata
heritage
socio-political revolution
collective memory
social agency
culture war
This article analyses a certain aspect of immaterial Polish heritage, namely the memory of the social-political phenomenon known as the worker-peasant republic. Particular attention will be devoted to the Republic of Tarnobrzeg, and especially its changing fate in collective memory. First banned, it was then elevated to a poetic status before being relegated to oblivion. The fate of the heritage of the Republic of Tarnobrzeg will be depicted against the backdrop of its broader historical and regional context, as well as through the prism of the contemporary processes of the renegotiation of memory which are taking place on a global scale.
