Niniejsza praca analizuje sposób przedstawiania zwierząt w wydanym w latach 1792-1796 zbiorze opowiadań dla dzieci "Evenings at Home" autorstwa Johna Aikina i Anny Laetitii Barbauld. Praca umieszcza publikację w ramach współczesnej debaty na temat praw zwierząt i następstw rewolucji francuskiej, która zapoczątkowała powszechną walkę o zmiany społeczne i prawa dla wcześniej uciskanych lub pomijanych grup społecznych. Co więcej, praca bardziej szczegółowo przygląda się intelektualnemu środowisku autorów aby pokazać dowody na ich aktywizm polityczny i społeczny, który jest niezbędny by zrozumieć intencje stojące za większością historii w "Evenings at Home". This thesis analyses the depiction of animals in John Aikin and Anna Laetitia Barbauld's "Evenings at Home", a collection of stories for children published in years 1792-1796. The thesis contextualises the book within the frame of the contemporary debate regarding animal rights and the aftermath of the French Revolution, which sparked the general strife for social changes and rights for the previously oppressed or omitted social groups. Furthermore, the thesis looks in more detail into the intellectual background of the authors to show evidence for their political and social activism, which is necessary to comprehend the social and political allusions in most of the stories in "Evenings at Home". The analysis is based on the assumption that the tales can be classified into three main categories: stories teaching empathy and praising animal sagacity, which were to benefit the cause of animal rights and shape a new generation of empathetic but critical thinkers; stories discussing relevant social issues, and even religious matters; and stories that could be alluding to contemporary politics. This distinction proves that the depiction of animals was meant to serve more than one purpose, with the literal reading equally significant to the allegorical one.
