Rhetoric of fear on the example of press statements about war refugees from Ukraine

Tematem pracy jest retoryka strachu w wybranych źródłach prasowych wypowiadających się na temat uchodźców wojennych z Ukrainy. Celem prowadzonych analiz było sprawdzenie, za pomocą jakich narzędzi i w jaki konkretnie sposób tygodniki takie jak: „Newsweek”, „Polityka”, „Tygodnik Powszechny” oraz serwisy Onet.pl i Kresy.pl straszą czytelników uchodźcami z Ukrainy i sytuacją, którą wytworzyło ich przybycie do Polski. Badania przeprowadzone zostały na materiale, który był publikowany od wybuchu wojny, czyli od 24.02.2022 r. do 23.02.2023 r. W toku analiz zwróciłam uwagę przede wszystkim na trzy narzędzia retoryki strachu: metaforę, stereotyp i słownictwo wartościujące. Pierwszy rozdział poświęciłam na opis tła historycznego, politycznego i społecznego wojny między Rosją a Ukrainą oraz reakcji Polaków na przybycie uchodźców. Rozdział drugi zawiera opis lęku i strachu, różnice między nimi, ich obecność w historii i przybliża pojęcie kultury strachu. Rozdział trzeci przedstawia definicję retoryki strachu oraz jej powiązanie z klasyczną retoryką. W tym rozdziale przybliżyłam również zagadnienia metafory, stereotypu i słownictwa wartościujące, które wykorzystywałam we własnych badaniach. Czwarty rozdział to analiza mojego materiału. Ostatni, piąty rozdział, to podsumowania i wnioski wynikające z przeprowadzonych analiz.

The subject of the work is the rhetoric of fear in selected press sources speaking about war refugees from Ukraine. The purpose of the conducted analyzes was to check with what tools and in what specific way weeklies such as: "Newsweek", "Polityka", "Tygodnik Powszechny" and the websites Onet.pl and Kresy.pl scare readers with refugees from Ukraine and the situation created by their arrival in Poland. The research was carried out on material that had been published since the outbreak of the war, that is from 24.02.2022 to 23.02.2023. In the course of the analysis, I focused on three tools of the rhetoric of fear: metaphor, stereotype and evaluative language. I devoted the first chapter to a description of the historical, political and social background of the war between Russia and Ukraine and the reaction of Poles to the arrival of refugees. The second chapter contains a description of fear and anxiety, the differences between them, their presence in history and introduces the concept of the culture of fear. The third chapter presents the definition of the rhetoric of fear and its connection with classical rhetoric. In this chapter, I also introduced the issues of metaphor, stereotype and evaluative language that I used in my own research. The fourth chapter is an analysis of my material. The last, fifth chapter is a summary and conclusions from the analyzes carried out.
