A plant-based diet is one of the responses to the current problem of climate change. However, it is also a highly controversial and divisive topic. One of the reasons for this is the negative image of vegetarians and vegans in society. The aim of this study is to examine the language used by vegans and vegetarians regarding their diets and beliefs and to identify the narrative that has the greatest potential to convince others to adopt veganism. The study discusses marketing strategies that influence public opinion about veganism, as well as the essence of other individual environmental actions. These include greenwashing and deflection campaigns (M.E. Mann, The New Climate War), which manipulate information about the environmental characteristics of certain products and services and shift the responsibility for ecological action from companies and institutions to ordinary people and their individual consumer choices.Due to the immense pressure for an ecological lifestyle imposed by marketing on consumers, the hypothesis of this study assumes the existence of a rigorous evaluative narrative among vegans and vegetarians, which considers veganism to have higher value. As part of the research, comments from three popular vegetarian-vegan groups on Facebook were analyzed. The comments were mainly examined in terms of language devices and arguments presented. The analysis confirmed the existence of the judgemental narrative that persuades people to adopt veganism through shaming, strong emotions, and criticism. However, it also revealed the presence of a parallel sustainable narrative that emerged in response to the strict principles of veganism propagated by the evaluative narrative. The sustainable narrative primarily approaches the diet with a sense of distance and positions it as a subordinate value to relationships with other people. The way to convince others to adopt veganism in this narrative involves empathy and understanding the difficulties that individuals may encounter when trying to eat more plant-based foods. This approach stems from the high awareness of vegans regarding public opinion about them and the need to maintain a positive image of the vegan movement. The sustainable narrative has a greater chance of encouraging others to adopt veganism because it has lower expectations of individuals on this diet. It is more understanding, prioritizes the comfort of individuals, and appreciates the efforts of individuals at every stage of their interest in the diet.
