The image of the Russo-Ukrainian War in the American press on the example of The New York Times

Trwająca do dziś wojna rosyjsko-ukraińska jest przełomowym wydarzeniem w historii współczesnego świata. Oprócz zniszczeń i ofiar śmiertelnych, powoduje ona zmiany w gospodarce, polityce, ekologii i społeczeństwie w krajach objętych wojną, ale także w wymiarze międzynarodowym i globalnym. Dlatego badania dotyczące wojny i jej skutków w czasie rzeczywistym są niezwykle istotne.Niniejsza praca podejmuje problematykę obrazowania wojny w mediach amerykańskich. Po zakończeniu zimnej wojny Stany Zjednoczone stały się pierwszym i głównym supermocarstwem świata. W pracy założono, że ustanawianie agendy tematycznej w prasie amerykańskiej formuje porządek dzienny oraz opinię publiczną nie tylko w USA, ale również na całym świecie. Z tego względu została przeprowadzona analiza zawartości jednego z najbardziej prestiżowych i cytowanych na świecie amerykańskich dzienników - The New York Times pod kątem obrazowania wojny w Ukrainie. Celem badań było sprawdzenie, czy i jak zmienił się sposób prezentowania wojny rosyjsko-ukraińskiej od 24 lutego 2022 r. po 31 marca 2023 r. w prasie amerykańskiej. W wymiarze ogólnym istotne było rozpoznanie agendy tematycznej prezentowanej w NYT oraz jej interpretacja w kontekście koncepcji agendy-setting. Wyniki badania zilustrowały rosnącą rolę Ukrainy w badanych przekazach medialnych, tendencję do coraz bardziej aktywnego potępiania Rosji oraz prób prognozowania możliwych scenariuszy zakończenia wojny, a także wizji relacji międzynarodowych na przyszłość.

The ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War is a crucial event in the history of the modern world. In addition to the destruction and loss of life, it causes changes in the economy, politics, ecology and society in war-torn countries, but also internationally and globally. This is why real-time research on war and its effects is extremely important.This work deals with the issue of depicting the war in the American media. After the end of the Cold War, the United States became the world's first and foremost superpower. The work assumes that setting the thematic agenda in the American press forms the agenda and public opinion not only in the USA, but also around the world. For this reason, an analysis of the content of one of the most prestigious and quoted American newspapers in the world - The New York Times - was carried out in terms of depicting the war in Ukraine. The aim of the research was to check whether and how the way of presenting the Russo-Ukrainian War changed from February 24, 2022 to March 31, 2023 in the American press. In general terms, it was important to recognize the thematic agenda presented in the NYT and its interpretation in the context of the agenda-setting concept. The results of the study illustrated the growing role of Ukraine in the analyzed media messages, the tendency to increasingly actively condemn Russia and attempts to forecast possible scenarios for ending the war, as well as the vision of international relations for the future.
