"Rice" by Su Tong as a dystopian novel

Su Tong to jeden z najważniejszych przedstawicieli chińskiej literatury współczesnej. Tematem niniejszej pracy jest analiza jego neohistorycznej powieści „Ryż” jako utworu dystopijnego. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiono chińską scenę literacką lat 70., 80. i 90. XX w., ze szczególnym zwróceniem uwagi na środowisko twórców awangardowych. Drugi rozdział zawiera życiorys Su Tonga oraz opis jego najważniejszych utworów i cech twórczości. Rozdział trzeci poświęcono krótkiemu przedstawieniu utopii jako terminu literackiego, opisano również powstanie i różnice w ewolucji dystopii na Zachodzie i w Chinach. W rozdziale czwartym zanalizowano fragmenty powieści „Ryż”, skupiając się na obrazie społeczeństwa oraz relacjach rodzinnych.

Su Tong is one of the most important representatives of Chinese contemporary literature. The subject of this thesis is the analysis of his neo-historical novel "Rice" as a dystopian work. The first chapter presents the Chinese literary scene of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, with particular emphasis on the community of avant-garde authors. The second chapter comprises Su Tong's biography and a description of his most important works and features of his writing style. The third chapter contains a brief introduction to utopia as a literary term and a description of the origins and differences in the evolution of dystopias in the West and in China. In the last chapter, the author analyses fragments of the novel "Rice", focusing on the depiction of society and family relations.
