The main subject of the work is the Illegals Program, a group of Russian sleeper spies arrested in the United States in 2010. The main goals of the work are to characterize the spies and examine the espionage methods used by them. The counterintelligence methods used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation are also studied and analysed. The work also focuses on the effects of the arrest on US-Russian relations and US domestic politics. The first chapter of the work includes a brief history of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the most important prosecutions in its history, examples of the impact of intelligence and counterintelligence on international relations, as well as descriptions of US-Russian rivalry and the technique of sleeper agent. The second chapter includes a description of the spies belonging to the Illegals Program, the methods used by the community, and a description of the course of Operation Ghost Stories conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The final chapter focuses on the consequences of the arrests. Both external and internal effects on the United States are analysed. The stated goals are met, and the hypothesis of the event's impact on international relations, as well as on US domestic politics, is debunked.
