An operatic transposition of the Don Quixote theme : literary and musical narration in Don Quichotte by Jules Massenet

Opera Don Kichot Jules’a Masseneta, dzieło skomponowane do libretta Henriego Caina i wystawione po raz pierwszy w 1910 roku, stanowi jeden z wyrazistych przykładów przeniesienia wątku literackiego w krąg teatru muzycznego, a zarazem interesujący przejaw konstruowania libretta operowego jako dość swobodnej transpozycji oryginalnej historii. W tekście przedstawiono sposób, w jako została wykreowana postać Don Kichota w tym utworze, a także interpretacja sfery narracyjnej dzieła. Te zagadnienia zademonstrowano w odniesieniu do dwóch zasadniczych wymiarów dzieła operowego: literackiego (libretto) i muzycznego (partytura), a zaproponowana interpretacja porównawcza pozwala także na odpowiedź na pytanie o atrakcyjność wątku Don Kichota jako tematu dzieł muzycznych.

Don Quichotte, an opera by Jules Massenet to a French libretto by Henri Cain first performed in 1910, is one of the most suggestive examples of a transposition of a literary theme to musical theatre and of a creative adaptation of a literary source-text into an operatic libretto. This article explores the manner in which the opera creates a musical portrait of the main character and presents an interpretation of the opera’s narrative. The analysis is conducted on two levels, textual (the libretto) and musical (the score). The conclusion, apart from its summarizing function, offers an answer to the question about the attractiveness of the Don Quixote theme for musical adaptations.
