A premonition of catastrophe, a practice of resignation : on the human condition in the face of the anthropocene (on two film examples)

Oblicza kondycji człowieka w epoce (późnego) antropocenu wyłaniające się z filmów Pierwszy reformowany (2017) i Zielony rycerz (2021), zrealizowanych po społeczno-kulturowym rozpoznaniu ludzkich ingerencji w (eko)systemy ziemskie, w niniejszym szkicu stanowią przyczynek do podjęcia namysłu nad przejawami praktykowania rezygnacji w związku z przeczuwaną katastrofą. Strategie twórcze Paula Schradera (przetworzenie schematów kina religijnego) i Davida Lowery’ego (reinterpretacja tropów ekranizacji mitów arturiańskich) można czytelnie odczytać jako osobne, acz paradygmatycznie pokrewne sobie reakcje na egzystencjalne niepokoje współczesności. Strategie te ujawniają się zarówno na polu specyficznej temporalności narracji, jak i poprzez wizualne napięcie pomiędzy koncyliacyjną, sublimującą trwogę monumentalizacją (estetyzacją - Joanna Żylińska) ruin a obezwładniającą wzniosłością (Arnold Berleant), bodaj szczególnie kompatybilną z dynamiką panapokaliptycznych reprezentacji rzeczywistości.

In this sketch, the visions of the human condition in the (late) Anthropocene emerging from two, realized after the sociocultural recognition of human interference in Earth’s (eco)systems, films: First Reformed (2017) and The Green Knight (2021), give a rise to the reflection upon symptoms of practicing resignation in the face of a sensed catastrophe. The artistic strategies of Paul Schrader (i.e. processing the schemas of religious cinema) and David Lowery (i.e. reinterpreting the tropes of the Arthurian legend on the screen) can clearly be read as separate, yet paradigmatically related reactions to the existential anxieties of the present. These strategies are revealed both in the specific temporal nature of the narrative and in the visual tension between the conciliatory, fear-sublimating monumentalization (aestheticization—Joanna Żylińska) of the ruins and the overpowering sublime (Arnold Berleant), especially compatible, perhaps, with the dynamics of pan-apocalyptic representations of reality.
