Humor w "Opowieści młynarza" Geoffreya Chaucera

Celem niniejszej pracy licencjackiej jest przedstawienie źródeł, narzędzi i funkcji komizmu w „Opowieści młynarza” Geoffreya Chaucera. Głównym obiektem mojego zainteresowania jest humor wynikający z zestawienia wyniosłych idei ze przyziemnością oraz z ukrytych znaczeń i gier słownych. Praca podzielona jest na pięć rozdziałów. Pierwszy z nich zawiera wstęp teoretyczny, w którym zostały zawarte: tło historyczne powstania dzieła, opis gatunku literackiego, opis jego rodzajów komizmu występujących w tekście oraz analiza narracji i narratora. W kolejnych rozdziałach znajduje się analiza czterech postaci z opowieści, tj. Nicholasa, Johna, Absolona i Alisoun. Wszyscy bohaterowie zostali zestawieni z postaciami biblijnymi i świętymi, które parodiują. Postaci męskie zostały także omówione pod względem swoich przymiotników osobistych. Dodatkowo, rozdział dotyczący Nicholasa został poszerzony o analizę jego imienia, rozdział o Absolonie o zestawienie jego profesji z jego czynami, natomiast rozdział na temat Alisoun o opis sytuacji kobiet w średniowieczu.

The aim of my thesis is to present the sources, tools and functions of comedy in Geoffrey Chaucer's “The Miller's Tale”. The main object of my interest is the humour derived from the juxtaposition of lofty ideas with the mundane and from hidden meanings and wordplays. The work is divided into five chapters. The first chapter contains a theoretical introduction, which contains the historical background of the piece, a description of its literary genre, a description of the types of humour in the text and an analysis of the narrative and the narrator. The following chapters contain analyses of four characters from the story, i.e. Nicholas, John, Absolon and Alisoun. All the characters are compared with the religious figures they parody. The male characters are also discussed in terms of their personal adjectives. In addition, the chapter on Nicholas is expanded to include an analysis of his name, the chapter on Absolon to contrast his profession with his actions, and the chapter on Alisoun to mention a description of the situation of women in the Middle Ages.
