Challenges and Solutions in a Translation of a Non-binary novel. The Polish Translation of ''Written on the Body'' by Jeanette Winterson

Niniejsza praca magisterska poświęcona jest analizie porównawczej oryginału „Written on the Body” autorstwa Jeanette Winterson z polskim przekładem powieści wykonanym przez Hannę Mizerską. Jej celem jest wykazanie najważniejszych różnic w sposobie kreacji narratora w tekście angielskim i w jego polskim odpowiedniku. W oryginale bowiem Jeanette Winterson sięga po „nieupłciowioną” narrację pierwszoosobową, korzystając z gramatyki języka angielskiego, który w dużej mierze pozwala na prowadzenie komunikacji bezrodzajowej. Ukrywa przed czytelnikiem płeć narratora/narratorki i zarazem głównego/głównej bohatera/bohaterki swojej powieści. Hanna Mizerska, tłumacząc „Written on the Body” na język polski, który jest pod względem precyzowania rodzaju o wiele bardziej wymagający od angielszczyzny, zdecydowała się natomiast obdarzyć narratora/narratorkę tekstu płcią żeńską. W pracy próbowałam odpowiedzieć na następujące pytania: dlaczego i z pomocą jakich środków stylistyczno-językowych polska tłumaczka dokonała tej zmiany? Jak jej strategia tłumaczeniowa wpłynęła na recepcję i odczytanie powieści „Zapisane na ciele”? W toku rozważań przekładoznawczych podjęłam też problemy teoretyczne (genologiczne) ,,powieści niebinarnej” w kontekście językoznawczych i literaturoznawczych badań nad społeczno-kulturową tożsamością płci i teorii queer. Pracę podzieliłam na pięć rozdziałów. Pierwszy z nich przedstawia sylwetkę twórczą Winterson, zarys problematyki powieści „Written on the Body” oraz rozważania o charakterze genologicznym. Drugi dotyczy kategorii płci w języku polskim i angielskim. Rozdział trzeci zawiera analizę porównawczą oryginału „Written on the Body” z jego polskim przekładem – ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem różnic w sposobie kształtowania narracji. Rozdział czwarty stanowi przegląd tekstów krytycznych poświęconych powieści Jeanette Winterson – w języku polskim i angielskim. W piątym, natomiast, omawiam techniki tłumaczenia anglojęzycznych „powieści niebinarnych” na język polski i porównuję je do strategii zastosowanej przez Mizerską.

My master’s thesis is devoted to a comparative analysis of the original text of “Written on the Body” by Jeanette Winterson and the Polish translation of the novel by Hanna Mizerska. Its aim is to show the most important differences between the manner of conducting the narration in the English novel and in its Polish counterpart. Jeanette Winterson resorts to first-person, non-gendered narration. Taking advantage of the English grammar, which allows, to some extent, for non-gendered communication, Winterson doesn’t reveal the gender of the narrator and, at the same time, the main protagonist of her novel. Hanna Mizerska, while translating Written on the Body into Polish language, which is much more demanding in terms of specifying the genus, has chosen to make the narrator of the text female. In this thesis, I tried to answer the following questions: Why and with what stylistic means did the Polish translator make this change? How did her translation strategy affect the reception and reading of “Zapisane na ciele”? In the course of my comparative analysis of translations I also took up the theoretical (genological) problems of the “non-binary novel” in the context of linguistic and literary studies on gender and queer.The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first presents the creative portrait of Winterson, a thematic outline of the novel Written on the Body and genological considerations. The second chapter deals with gender categories in Polish and English languages. The third chapter contains a comparative analysis of the original text of “Written on the Body” and its Polish translation – with particular emphasis on the differences in narrative. The fourth provides an overview of critical texts devoted to Jeanette Winterson’s novel in Polish and English. The fifth and the last chapter discusses techniques of translating English-language “non-binary novels” into Polish and compares them to the strategy employed by Mizerska.
