A Socialist-realist song in post-war Poland. Selected issues, authors and examples

Praca dotyczy zagadnienia polskiej pieśni socrealistycznej (masowej) w latach powojennych do roku 1956. Opisany jest w niej kontekst historyczny (początki socrealizmu w Polsce, próby ustanowienia go jedyną dozwoloną formą przekazywania sztuki), system państwowego mecenatu (zachęt i dotacji dla twórców), założenia programowe i postulaty ideologiczne oraz artystyczne. Umieszczono biografie osób istotnych dla gatunku, ich losy po roku 1956. Poddano analizie muzycznej poddano kilka wybranych pieśni, porównano je z początkowymi założeniami muzykologów i polityków. Zakończenie zawiera podsumowanie i wnioski z przeprowadzonych analiz materiałów historycznych i muzycznych. Zamieszczono tam również postulaty dalszych badań nad tematem.

The paper concerns the issue of Polish social realist (mass) song in the post-war years until 1956. A historical context is presented, including the beginnings of socialist realism in Poland, attempts to establish it as the only permitted form of artistic expression, the system of state patronage (incentives and grants to artists), main objectives of the programme, as well as ideological and artistic postulates. The paper includes biographies of people important to the genre and their fate after 1956. A few selected pieces were subjected to musical analysis, and then compared with the initial assumptions of musicologists and politicians. The paper concludes with a summary and results of the performed analysis of historical and musical material. Postulates and suggestions for further research on the issue are also included.
