Romantic crisis of the strong subjectivity : fissures and appearances

Artykuł dotyczy "ja" romantycznego w kontekście współczesnych prac teoretycznoliterackich dotyczących podmiotowości nowoczesnej. Przyjmując istnienie mocnych konstrukcji podmiotowych w romantyzmie, autorka zwraca uwagę na te jego miejsca, w których ten esencjalistyczny model ulega zachwianiu, rozbiciu, pęknięciom. Stawia tezę, że w romantyzmie współistnieją dwa przeciwstawne procesy: odrodzenie indywidualizmu i kryzys podmiotu (rozumianego jako podmiot pewny siebie). Wskazywane tu symptomy kryzysu mocnego "ja" uznane zostają za jedne z najistotniejszych romantycznych antecedencji nowoczesności.

This article examines the romantic "I" in the context of contemporary critical discussions of the modern subjectivity. While in general romanticism was enamoured of strong subjectivities, it also produced quite a number of discourses where this essentialist construction was undermined, fi ssured, or fragmented. The article argues that Romanticism is in fact characterized by two processes, a blazing affi rmation of individualism and, running counter to it, an erosion and questioning of the integral subjectivity (the undermining of the self-confi dent, self-assertive subject). The latter, ie. the crisis of the "strong I", should be acknowledged as an important Romantic antecedent of modernity.
