Islamophobic of Caliphate – an analysis of the image of Muslims and the Islamic world in the Swedish drama TV series

W pracy przeprowadzona została analiza szwedzkiego serialu dramatycznego „Kalifat” (2020). Jej głównym celem było udzielenie odpowiedzi na pytania dotyczące tego, czy sposób przedstawienia muzułmanów oraz świata islamuwe wspomnianym tekście kultury można uznać za islamofobiczny. Rozprawa została podzielona na dwie główne części. W pierwszej z nich przywołano najważniejsze konteksty badawcze oraz powiązane z cywilizacją islamuterminy ważne dla poprawnego zrozumienia dalszej części wywodu. Istotny element tej części wywodu stanowi charakterystyka zjawiska islamofobii, która dokonana została zarówno w oparciu o podział na islamofobię progresywistyczną oraz konserwatywną, jak i osadzenie tego typu dyskursu w szerszych kontekstach kulturowych, religijnych, politycznych i społecznych. Druga część pracy została poświęcona analizie serialu „Kalifat” pod kątemislamofobiczności jego przekazu. W tym celu zbadano sposoby przedstawiania postaci powiązanych z centralnymi dla wspomnianego tekstu kultury wątkami oraz wynikające z nich implikacje. Ważną część tego rozdziału stanowiązestawienia przedstawionych w serialu obrazów muzułmanów i cywilizacji islamu z ich stereotypowym wydźwiękiem. W zakończeniu pracy przedstawiono i uporządkowano płynące z niej wnioski.

This work is an analysis of the Swedish drama television series „Caliphate” (2020). The objective of this study is to answer the questions related to the Islamophobic approach that appears in the presentation of Muslim characters and the Islamic world in the abovementioned cultural text. The dissertation is divided into two main parts. The first one develops the presentation of the main study subjects and the necessary terms for a correct understanding of the following part of the thesis. A key element of this section constitutes the outline of the phenomena of Islamophobia, which is subdivided into „progressive” and „conservative” Islamophobia. Furthermore, the discourse is grounded in broader cultural, religious, political and social contexts. The second part of the study is devoted to the analysis of “Caliphate” through the prism of Islamophobia. In order to achieve so, the way the characters are presented, the main series themes and its implications are analysed. Crucial is the juxtaposition of the ways of representing Muslims and the Islamic world in the „Caliphate” along with their stereotypical connotations. In the final comments, the conclusions are provided and ordered.
