Arab stereotypes in selected American movies after 2001

W niniejszej pracy, będącej częścią badań nad cywilizacją arabską i kinem, poddano analizie zjawisko stereotypowego obrazowania Arabów w filmach produkcji amerykańskiej. Jako okres badań wybrany został czas po tragicznych wydarzeniach z dnia 11.09.2001, czyli zamachu na World Trade Center w Nowym Jorku. Analiza odbywa się poprzez weryfikację obecności stereotypów, stopnia ich intensywności oraz kategorii. W wybranych pozycjach kinowych zwrócono uwagę na język, komunikaty, fabułę i wątki historyczne, mające pomóc w weryfikacji powielanych, nacechowanych stereotypami, schematów. Wyróżniono dwa przypadki: stereotypizacje dotyczącą terroryzmu i relacji rodzinnych (z akcentem położonym na sceny z obecnością samych kobiet). Badania skupiają się nie tylko na analizie dyskursu dotyczącego wspomnianej grupy, ale też na zrozumieniu, jakie zagrożenia, czy też możliwości niesie praktyka powtarzalności i postrzegania mieszkańców Bliskiego Wschodu w konkretny sposób. Wszystko to oparte jest na wyjaśnionych aspektach teoretycznych. Wśród omawianych zagadnień znajdują się między innymi jego źródła, funkcje i skutki w kinie zachodnim, z wyszczególnieniem stereotypów etnicznych, narodowych i religijnych. W celu lepszego zrozumienia tematu, dużo uwagi poświęcono charakterystyce cywilizacji arabskiej, wraz z podziałem na czas przed i po przyjęciu islamu. Dodatkowo, przedstawiono najistotniejsze wydarzenia historyczne, mające znaczenie dla stosunków arabsko-amerykańskich, z szczególnym akcentem położonym na polityczną ingerencję Stanów Zjedoczonych na terenie Bliskiego Wschodu. Zbudowane tło jest bazą do zrozumienia tych trudnych relacji. Zjawisko Islamofobii jest jednym z kluczowym dla niniejszej pracy, dlatego też przybliżono je szczegółowo w odniesieniu do wydarzeń z dnia 11.09.2001, co miało ogromny wpływ na kształt opisywanych w pracy filmów. Paradoksalnie, pomimo globalizacji i ogromnej możliwości selekcji informacji lęki wobec islamu niezmiennie powielają islamofobiczne stereotypy.

This work, which is part of the research on Arab civilization and cinema, analyzes the phenomenon of stereotypical depiction of Arabs in American movies. The time after the tragic events of September 11, 2001 that is the attack on the World Trade Center in New York, was chosen as the research time period. The analysis is carried out by verifying the presence of stereotypes, their degree of intensity and categories. Attention was paid to the language, messages, and historical plots, which should help in the verification of repeated stereotypical patterns. Two cases were distinguished: stereotypes about terrorism and family relations (with the emphasis placed on scenes with the presence of women). The research focuses not only on the analysis of the discourse concerning the mentioned group, but also on understanding what threats or opportunities are brought by the practice of repetition and perceiving the inhabitants of the Middle East in a specific way. All of this is based on the explained theoretical aspects. The issues discussed include, among others, its sources, functions and effects in Western cinema, with the specification of ethnic, national and religious stereotypes. In order to better understand the subject, much attention has been paid to the characteristics of Arab civilization, along with the division into the time before and after the adoption of Islam. Additionally, there are presented the most important historical events when it comes to the significance for Arab-American relations, with particular emphasis placed on the political interference of the United States in the Middle East region. The constructed background is the basis for understanding these difficult relations. The phenomenon of Islamophobia is one of the key issues of this research and therefore it has been presented in details with reference to the events of September 11, 2001, which had a huge impact on the shape of the described movies. Paradoxically, despite the globalization and many possibilities of selecting information, fears of Islam invariably reproduce Islamophobic stereotypes.
