Different faces of loneliness in the French Arthurian novels of the XIII century.

Tematem mojej pracy magisterskiej jest motyw samotności w dwóch XIII-wiecznych francuskich powieściach arturiańskich pisanych prozą. Pierwszą z nich jest Lancelot du Lac, którego autor pozostaje nieznany, a drugą Merlin et Arthur : le Graal et le royaume, której autorstwo przypisuje się w dużej części Robertowi de Boron. Moje badania mają na celu opisanie motywu samotności w wyżej wymienionych pozycjach i ukazanie pozytywnego lub negatywnego wpływu tejże samotności na bohaterów. Staram się już na początku pracy rozgraniczyć pojęcie samotności od osamotnienia i izolacji, o których także wspominam, ponieważ ściśle się ze sobą łączą. Moja praca podzielona jest na trzy rozdziały. W pierwszym opisane zostały trzy główne przestrzenie samotności: pustelnie, klasztory i więzienia, które pełniły w literaturze podmiotu wyjątkowo ważną rolę. W drugim rozdziale przedstawione zostały niebezpieczeństwa związane z wyborem samotnego życia, natomiast w rozdziale trzecim przeanalizowałam przypadki sytuacji, w których samotność pozytywnie wpłynęła na bohaterów powieści. Przeprowadzone analizy ukazują, że samotność w starofrancuskiej literaturze arturiańskiej mogła przyjmować różne oblicza – czasami niczym choroba prowadziła do upadku, a kiedy indziej była lekiem na zło, którego bohater doświadczył.

The subject of my thesis is the motive of loneliness present in two 13th century French Arthurian novels. The first is Lancelot du Lac of unknown authorship and the second is Merlin et Arthur : le Graal et le royaume, the authorship of which is largely attributed to Robert de Boron. My research aims to describe the motif of loneliness in the above-mentioned books and show its positive or negative impact on the characters. I try at the beginning of the work to distinguish the concepts of loneliness from solitude and isolation, which I also mention, as they are strictly connected. My work is divided into three chapters. The first describes the three main spaces of loneliness, which have played an exceptionally important role in the literature in question. The second describes the dangers of choosing to live alone and the third analyzes cases in which loneliness positively affected the characters in the novel. The following analysis shows that loneliness could take on different faces in the Middle Ages - sometimes like a disease it led to the downfall of the hero, and at other times it was a cure for the evil he experienced.

Le sujet de mon travail est le motif de la solitude présent dans deux romans arthuriens en prose du XIIIe siècle : Lancelot du Lac, d'un auteur inconnu, et Merlin et Arthur : le Graal et le royaume, dont la paternité est largement attribuée à Robert de Boron. Ma recherche vise à décrire le motif de la solitude dans les ouvrages susmentionnés et à montrer son influence positive ou négative sur les personnages. Dans la première partie du mémoire je cherche à distinguer les concepts de solitude, de sentiment de solitude et d'isolement que j’évoque également, car ils sont liés de manière inséparable. Le mémoire est divisé en trois chapitres. Le premier présente les trois principaux espaces de solitude qui ont joué un rôle particulièrement important dans la littérature en question. Dans le deuxième chapitre, j’analyse les dangers du choix de vivre en solitude, et dans le troisième, j’envisage les situations dans lesquelles la solitude a influencé positivement les héros. Les analyses effectuées démontrent que dans les textes analysés, la solitude pouvait revêtir différents visages : parfois, comme une maladie, elle entraînait la chute du héros, et d'autres fois, elle devenait un remède contre le mal vécu.
