On translation as a strategy of changing street names as in Rzeszów (Reishof) in 1939-1944

Street names not only have a topographical- spatial orientation function, but also reflect history and are a political and cultural instrument. At the time of the National Socialist dictatorship street and place names were changed in Germany. Also in the cities of the occupated Poland many streets and squares were renamed during the Second World War. The article aims to present the translation from Polish into German as one of the strategies used when changing street names in Rzeszów (Reishof) in the years 1939- 1944. An attempt is made to determine what degree of equivalence was achieved in the above- mentioned translating.

Straßennamen haben nicht nur eine topographisch- räumliche Orientierungsfunktion, sondern sind auch Spiegel der Geschichte und dienen als politisches und kulturelles Instrument. Zur Zeit der nationalsozialistischen Diktatur wurden in Deutschland Straßen- und Ortsnamen geändert. Auch in den Städten des besetzten Polens wurden im Zweiten Weltkrieg viele Straßen und Plätze umbenannt. Der Artikel zielt darauf ab, Strategien zu besprechen, die bei der Änderung von Straßennamen in Rzeszów (Reishof) in den Jahren 1939- 1944 verwendet wurden. Es wird versucht, festzustellen, welcher Äquivalenzgrad bei der Umbenennung erreicht wurde.
