Sources of financing for startups and their development in Poland in 2015-2020

Działalność przedsiębiorstw z sektora MŚP w Polsce ma ogromny wpływ na dynamizację i rozwój gospodarki kraju. Szczególny potencjał widoczny jest w przedsiębiorstwach typu startup, które cechują się szybkim wzrostem i innowacyjnością. Jednakże specyfika tych przedsiębiorstw pozwala wskazać na szczególną barierę jaką jest pozyskanie finansowania, ograniczającą rozwój tego ekosystemu w Polsce. Głównym celem niniejszej pracy było przedstawienie istoty startupów i źródeł ich finansowania oraz diagnoza źródeł finansowania i rozwoju tych przedsiębiorstw w Polsce w latach 2015-2020. Badanie zostało przeprowadzone za pomocą metody analizy danych wtórnych, pochodzących ze statystyk publicznych oraz raportów organizacji specjalizujących się w badaniu środowiska startupowego zarówno w Polsce, jak i w UE. Wyniki badania wskazały jednoznacznie, że ekosystem startupowy w Polsce jest nadal na początkowym etapie rozwoju, gdzie głównymi problemami w pozyskaniu kapitału są: wysokie zaangażowanie środków własnych, słabo rozwinięty rynek venture capital jak i pomoc aniołów biznesu. Jednocześnie pośrednim ograniczeniem jest element społeczno-kulturowy, gdyż polscy przedsiębiorcy wykazują brak zaufania oraz niechęć do podjęcia ryzyka.

The activity of enterprises from the SME sector in Poland has a huge impact on dynamizing and developing the country's economy. Particular potential is visible in start-ups, which are characterised by rapid growth and innovation. However, the specificity of these enterprises allows to point out a particular barrier, which is obtaining financing, limiting the development of this ecosystem in Poland. The main objective of thesis was to present the essence of startups and sources of financing them, as well as to diagnose the sources of funding and the development of Polish startups in the period 2015-2020. The study was carried out using the secondary data analysis method, while the data used came mainly from public statistic and the reports of organisations specialising in the study of the startup environment both in Poland and in the EU. The results of the survey clearly indicated that the startup ecosystem in Poland is still at an early stage of development, where the main problems in raising capital are high involvement of own resources, underdeveloped venture capital market and assistance of business angels. At the same time, an indirect limitation is the socio-cultural element, where Polish entrepreneurs show a lack of trust and unwillingness to take risks.
