Podejście stylistyczne do przekładu opowiadania Joyce Carol Oates „Przeklęci mieszkańcy Domu w Bly”

Celem niniejszej pracy jest stworzenie pierwszego polskiego tłumaczenia opowiadania Joyce Carol Oates pod tytułem „Accursed Inhabitants of the House of Bly”, adaptacji noweli Henry’ego Jamesa, The Turn of the Screw. Rozdział pierwszy rozpoczyna się od analizy stylu Oates w porównaniu ze stylem Jamesa; analiza ta ukazuje wyraźne podobieństwo w zakresie budowy zdania. Podobnie jak James, Oates stosuje długie zdania o nietypowym szyku, zawierające liczne wtrącenia; używa również krótszych, dobitnych zdań, tworząc w ten sposób wyraźny kontrast. Dalsza część rozdziału skupia się na stworzonym przez Philipa Lewisa i Jacques’a Derridę pojęciu przemocy w przekładzie; może mieć ono zastosowanie w tłumaczeniu „Accursed Inhabitants”. Rozdział drugi zawiera pełne, opatrzone przypisami tłumaczenie opowiadania, którego celem jest odtworzenie wyjątkowego stylu i „przemocy” zastosowanej wobec tekstu oryginału.

The aim of this dissertation is to provide the first Polish translation of Joyce Carol Oates’ “Accursed Inhabitants of the House of Bly”, a rewriting of Henry James’ novella The Turn of the Screw. The first chapter begins with an analysis of Oates’ style in comparison with that of James, which reveals a high degree of similarity in sentence structure. Like James, Oates uses long, unusually ordered sentences with many interjections, but she also adds short, perspicuous ones to create a marked contrast. The remainder of the chapter is an overview of Philip Lewis’ and Jacques Derrida’s concept of abuse in translation, which can be applied to “Accursed Inhabitants”. The second chapter contains a full annotated translation of the short story which strives to recreate the unique style and text abuse of the original.
