Characteristics of the Verbal Morphological Category of Aspect in the Cantonese Language

Tematem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest kategoria aspektu morfologicznego języka kantońskiego. Z uwagi na brak w języku kantońskim kategorii morfologicznej czasu, aspekt zajmuje w tym systemie miejsce szczególne, gdyż jest jedynym sposobem na morfologiczne wyrażenie zależności temporalnych. Celem pracy jest przedstawienie funkcjonowania poszczególnych aspektów języka kantońskiego, bazując na zaprezentowanych uprzednio założeniach teoretycznych, które czerpią z dotychczasowych osiągnięć językoznawców w tej dziedzinie. Rozdział pierwszy poświęcony został przedstawieniu teorii aspektologii. W nim również zawarte zastało uzasadnienie autora co do zasadności opisywania wyznaczników aspektu języka kantońskiego w obrębie morfologii. Rozdział drugi jest opisem poszczególnych aspektów, występujących w języku kantońskim. Rozdziały trzeci i czwarty stanowią egzemplifikację funkcjonowania morfologicznych wykładników poszczególnych aspektów, wraz z komentarzami autora pracy. Rozdział trzeci traktuje o aspektach perfektywnych, natomiast czwarty o imperfektywnych. Część badawcza, zawarta w rozdziałach trzecim i czwartym, oparta została na autentycznych wypowiedziach kantońskich, zaczerpniętych z korpusu tego języka. Praca stanowi próbę odpowiedzi na dotychczasowy brak konsensusu wśród sinologów co do liczby jak i rodzajów aspektów, które występują w języku kantońskim. Przedstawiona w pracy typologia aspektów języka kantońskiego jest oryginalną propozycją autora, a nie odtwórczym przedstawieniem założeń innych badaczy.

Presented MA thesis deals with the morphological category of aspect in Cantonese. Given the lack of a morphological category of tense in Cantonese, aspect holds a particular position in this system, as it is the only way to express temporal relations morphologically. The aim of this thesis is to present the functioning of the various aspects of Cantonese, based on the theoretical framework presented beforehand, which draws on the previous achievements of linguists in this field. The first chapter is devoted to the presentation of the theory of aspectology. It also contains the author's justification for describing aspect markers in Cantonese within the scope of morphology. The second chapter is a description of particular aspects occurring in Cantonese. The third and fourth chapters exemplify the functioning of morphological markers of particular aspects, together with the author's comments. The third chapter concerns perfective aspects, while the fourth concerns the imperfective ones. The research part, contained in chapters three and four, is based on authentic Cantonese utterances extracted from the corpus of the language. The paper is an attempt to respond to the hitherto lack of consensus among Sinologists about the number as well as the types of aspects that occur in Cantonese. The typology of aspects of Cantonese presented in this paper is the author's original proposal, not a reconstruction of other researchers' hypotheses.
