Choć historia aborcji jest niemalże tak długa jak historia ludzkości, ów zabieg od wieków stanowi temat zaciętych dyskusji. Jest to szczególnie zauważalne w Stanach Zjednoczonych, gdzie spory pomiędzy zwolennikami legalizacji procedury a grupami pro-life są przyczyną głębokich podziałów społecznych. Rok 1973 był przełomowy w kontekście debaty na temat aborcji, gdyż wtedy, na drodze rozstrzygnięcia kazusu Roe v. Wade, zabieg przerwania ciąży stał się legalny na terenie całego kraju. Although the history of abortion is almost as long as the history of mankind, the medical procedure has been the subject of fierce debate for centuries. It is particularly visible in the United States, where the disputes between supporters of the legalization of abortion and pro-life groups are the cause of deep social divisions. The year 1973 was landmark in the context of the abortion debate. Through the Roe v. Wade decision, the termination of pregnancy became legal in the country. This paper presents the history of the aforementioned ruling and the scale of changes that can be traced back to the Supreme Court’s decision. According to available data, the legalization of abortion has had a significant impact on the life and health of female citizens of the United States, their socioeconomic status, and the structure of the American family as well. There is also mentioned the pending Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case which may result in the recriminalization of abortion in the country.
